on Sunday, 04/07/2010 — Ana Paula Leite

The UMass Dartmouth Summer Program in Portuguese, organized by the Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture and sponsored by the Luso-American Foundation and the UMD College of Arts & Sciences, will begin its 17th annual five-week session on July 7th.

Students will come to UMD from across the US, and as far away as China and the Philippines, to study the Portuguese language here in southeastern Massachusetts, home to North America’s oldest and largest Portuguese-speaking community. Activities include concerts from local Brazilian and Portuguese musical groups, lectures on the Portuguese-speaking world, and student excursions to Martha’s Vineyard and Newport.

There is still a limited amount of scholarship assistance available for the course in advanced Portuguese language, as well as the course on Portuguese-American literature, which is taught in English. For more information, contact the Center at 508-999-8255 or visit the program website at www.portstudies.umassd.edu/summer/summer.htm.
