The second call is about to be opened for Collaborative Research Grant Applications in the HMS-Portugal Program in Translational and Clinical Research and Health Information.
The HMS-Portugal Program is a vital collaboration that is extending the impact of Harvard Medical School (HMS) research and education to universities and medical schools throughout Portugal. The first year of this collaboration has already been a success.
The deadline for receipt of applications is expected to be 29 October 2010. Confirmation of this deadline will be provided when the formal call for applications is posted on the FCT website, hopefully within the next several weeks.
The HMS-Portugal Collaborative Grants in Translational and Clinical Research are designed to foster collaborative research activities between groups at Harvard and in Portugal. Any research topic in the biomedical sciences relevant to human disease is appropriate for this program, and applications that include a translational and/or clinical research component are especially encouraged. The HMS-Portugal Program expects to award Collaborative Research Grants to at least three new Harvard/Portugal research teams by the end of this calendar year, with funding to commence at the beginning of 2011. These collaborative research teams will join the three Harvard/Portugal research teams that have been funded over the past year in translational and clinical science.
A successful competitive award will involve a collaborative effort between (at least) one research group at Harvard and (at least) two research groups from different institutions in Portugal. All investigators with a Harvard appointment are eligible to participate, including researchers from Harvard Medical School, HMS-affiliated hospitals and research institutions, Harvard School of Public Health, Harvard School of Dental Medicine and other Harvard faculties and Schools. Each grant will provide funding for two years, with the possibility (upon evaluation) of extension for a third year. A typical award will provide resources up to 160,000 dollars per year (direct costs) for the Harvard group(s) involved in the proposal, and up to 200,000 Euros per year for the Portuguese groups involved in the proposal. Within each team of Harvard and Portuguese investigators, one of the investigators in Portugal will be designated the "Principal Applicant" and will be responsible for submitting the application to the website of the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (Foundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT)) and for coordinating the research on behalf of the team. He/she will also act as the team's liaison with the HMS-Portugal Program and will be required to submit annual budgets and progress reports.
